O Magazine's April issue is on newsstands now.

In honor of national poetry month, O Magazine dedicated their April issue to poetry.  My sister Maria guest edited the issue and I had the opportunity to contribute some of my own thoughts on how Emily Dickinson’s poem “Exultation Is the Going” helped me cope as I was mourning the loss of my mother. My family has always shared a love of the sea, and although I am no Dickinson, I also wanted to share a poem that I wrote, which continues on this same theme.

Exultation Is the Going
By Emily Dickenson
Exultation is the going
Of an inland soul to sea,
Past the houses—past the headlands—
Into deep Eternity—

Bred as we, among the mountains,
Can the sailor understand
The divine intoxication
Of the first league out from land?

Casting Off
by Tim Shriver
Sailing is the heart’s own wonder
Billowing in flow and sea
Life unfurled in wave and silence
Reach to run eternally

Mystery bound in lines hauled closely
Draws the cutting bow deep knee’d
Loosed am I to worship oceans
When the mystery is free’d

  1. WOW – very very sweet. I saw the webcast of your father’s funeral and your words touched me deeply. I have spent two years grieving the loss of my best friend, my dad. My dad went to Mass every day too and as I have matured, my Jesuit / Catholic education has surfaced in many. From your words, I was inspired by your father’s commitment to prayer and connecting with the Holy Spirit.

    Thank You.
