TLC’s “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, surrounded by Special Olympics athletes, presented his comemorative cake at the press conference announcing New Jersey as host of the 2014 Special Olympics USA National Games.

It’s official! The 2014 Special Olympics USA National Games will be held in New Jersey June 13-21, 2014. The announcement came today at the Prudential Center in Newark, where the 2014 Opening Ceremony will be held. The New Jersey Devils hosted the event and the star of TLC’s program “The Cake Boss,” Buddy Valastro, baked a commemorate cake for the reception to celebrate the Games coming to his state of New Jersey. Special Olympics New Jersey President, Marc Edenzon had the honor of making it official and said, “[New Jersey] is in an excellent position to provide an extraordinary opportunity for acceptance.” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie then took the stage and added, “This event will place a spotlight on what makes NJ the greatest: the human spirit.”

The 2014 Games will bring an estimated 80,000 people to New Jersey with 3,500 athletes, 1,000 coaches and delegates, 8,000 volunteers, 50,000 spectators and more than 15,000 family and friends. The Games could bring a staggering $50 million into the New Jersey economy, but the most important impact will be the legacy of courage, inclusion and respect that will be left behind long after 2014 Closing Ceremonies. Tim Shriver, Special Olympics Chairman & CEO, concluded the announcement with, “To be able to break down barriers and play together…THAT is big business.”
