John Franklin Stephens

The following is a guest post in the form of an open letter from Special Olympics athlete and global messenger John Franklin Stephens to Ann Coulter after this tweet during last night’s Presidential debate.

Dear Ann Coulter,

Come on Ms. Coulter, you aren’t dumb and you aren’t shallow.  So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?

I’m a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public’s perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow.  I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you.  In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.

I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have.

Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next.

Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift.

Because, Ms. Coulter, that is who we are – and much, much more.

After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me.  You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.

I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash.

Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.

No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much.

Come join us someday at Special Olympics.  See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.

A friend you haven’t made yet,
John Franklin Stephens

  3. Whether you’re a business or personal brand, you should definitely pay attention to Pinterest.
Unfortunately, it’s also introduced a host of ways to violate intellectual property
laws. It does mean figuring out where your target audience is engaging (social networking sites)
and developing a strategy for how you’re going to reach them.

  4. My spouse and i got really glad that Edward managed to conclude his web research while using the precious recommendations he got out of the web pages. It is now and again perplexing to just happen to be giving for free tactics that the rest could have been trying to sell. And now we understand we have got you to thank for this. The explanations you’ve made, the simple blog menu, the friendships you help to create it’s got most extraordinary, and it is aiding our son and our family believe the topic is satisfying, and that’s pretty serious. Many thanks for all the pieces!

  5. Hey there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was
wondering which blog platform are you using for this website?

I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at options
for another platform. I would be great if you could point me
in the direction of a good platform.

  6. When I initially left a comment I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I recieve 4
emails with the exact same comment. Perhaps there is an easy method you are able to remove me from that service?
    Thank you!

  7. Heya! I know this is somewhat off-topic however I had to ask.
Does running a well-established blog like yours take a lot of work?
I’m completely new to running a blog but I do write in my diary everyday.
I’d like to start a blog so I will be able to share my personal experience
and feelings online. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or tips for new aspiring blog owners.

    Appreciate it!

  8. Oh my goodness! Amazing article dude! Thanks, However I am experiencing difficulties
with your RSS. I don’t understand why I cannot subscribe to it.
Is there anyone else having the same RSS problems?
Anyone who knows the answer will you kindly respond?
    Thanks!!

  9. You actually make it appear so easy with your presentation however I find this
matter to be actually something that I think I might never understand.
It sort of feels too complicated and very vast for me. I am taking a
look forward in your subsequent submit, I’ll attempt to get
    the hold of it!

  10. Hey There. I found your blog using msn. This is
a really well written article. I will be sure
to bookmark it and return to read more of your useful information. Thanks for the post.
    I will certainly comeback.

  11. I’ve been browsing online more than 3 hours today,
yet I by no means found any fascinating article like yours.
It is lovely worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made just right content as you probably did, the net might be a lot more helpful than ever before.

  12. This design is wicked! You definitely know
how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit
and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job.
I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented
    it. Too cool!

  13. May I just say what a relief to discover someone who genuinely knows what they’re discussing over
the internet. You actually know how to bring an issue to light
and make it important. A lot more people have to read this and understand this side of the story.

It’s surprising you’re not more popular given that you definitely possess the gift.

  14. I am really loving the theme/design of your website. Do you ever run into any
web browser compatibility problems? A handful of my
blog audience have complained about my site not working
correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox. Do you have any ideas to help fix this issue?

  15. Aw, this was an exceptionally nice post. Taking the time and actual effort
to make a really good article… but what can I say… I put things off a whole lot and don’t manage to get
    anything done.
