Thanks to the generous support of the Mattel Children’s Foundation, Global Family Leaders from Chinese Taipei organized an event to commemorate Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, provide health screenings to athletes, and hold a forum for families about becoming involved in Special Olympics. The event, led by Fu Shun Lee, included an information seminar and demonstration of healthy athletes.
Lee, who attended the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece returned from the Games inspired and eager to tell more families of people with intellectual disabilities about the support and inclusion he finds in Special Olympics as the parent of an athlete.
Lee explains “between 2008 and 2010, I had the opportunity to attend East Asia Family forums and Young Athletes promotional activities in mainland China where I met family members from different areas. We exchanged our joy and sorrow in our experiences, as well as our opinions about the future development of the Special Olympics movement. We believe that by introducing Special Olympics to more families and to the public, by inspiring athletes and their families to be brave and show courage, we can help build a more inclusive community full of acceptance, respect and friendship.”
